Your NDIS Plan: Capital Supports

Your NDIS Plan: Capital Supports
Explaining your plan - what are Capital Supports and how do you know what you can spend them on?

General Information

  • Capital Supports are usually higher priced items that are for very specific purposes. They can be for your home, car, or disability related equipment.
  • The NDIS usually approves funding based on quotes and supporting documentation.
  • Capital Supports are usually ‘Stated’. That means you must use your funding the way it has been described in your plan.
  • Unless your plan says you can use your funding flexibly, you need permission from the NDIS to purchase other items. If you have ‘leftover’ funds, you can only buy items that are Reasonable & Necessary for you.
  • Payments can only be made in advance in special circumstances. See the AT, Home Modifications and Consumables Code Guide.
  • You might need to make a co-payment for customised products or modifications which the NDIS has not funded.
  • Capital supports must be NDIS supports and not everyday items.
  • Invoices and reimbursements must meet guidelines.

Assistive Technology

  • Items that help you live more independently or assist your carers to look after you.
  • Includes vehicle modifications to enable you to drive or travel more safely as a passenger.
  • Some low-cost AT can be bought from your Core – Consumables budget.
  • For further information, see Assistive Technology Explained.

Assistive Technology Maintenance, Repair & Rental

  • Renting equipment you need (usually short term or to trial before buying).
  • Repairing your disability AT – only if not covered under warranty.
  • Repairs must cost less than $1,500, otherwise they need NDIS approval.

Home Modifications

  • Help you better manage your disability and increase safety and mobility around your home.
  • Covers design, construction, installation and changes to your home.
  • Minor or major repairs, depending on cost and structural changes.
  • Cannot be used for standard home repairs, renovations or modifications.
  • For further information see Home Modfications Explained.

Specialist Disability Accommodation

  • For when you need specialist housing solutions due to high support needs.
  • Does not cover cost of personal care supports, rent or bills.
  • Can only be paid to registered providers.
  • For further information see SDA Explained.

Need Help?

Capital Supports are very complex. You must use your plan as the NDIS intended you to use it. If you are not sure about anything, get in touch with someone and ask them. You could ask:

  • Your support coordinator or psychosocial recovery coach, if you have one.
  • Your “My NDIS Contact” as listed on your plan. This may be a planner or LAC.
  • Ask the NDIS via email, call 1800 800 110 or do a webchat.
